Appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor

Edge Hill University is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Michael Young as our new Vice Chancellor, following the retirement of Dr John Cater.

Professor Young will join the University in June from his current position as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sunderland.

As DVC at Sunderland, Michael has been responsible for the University’s academic portfolio, teaching and learning, educational partnerships and research. He delivered ambitious strategies for student success, digital learning and graduate prospects, and led a major expansion of the portfolio, establishing the University’s medical school, online programmes and degree apprenticeships.

He was formerly Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) at De Montfort University, Pro-Warden (Students and Learning Development) at Goldsmiths, University of London and the Head of Music.

Clive Elliott, Pro Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Governors at Edge Hill University, who led the recruitment process and chaired the appointment panel, said:

“After a thorough national search and appointment process, Michael is an outstanding appointment. His breadth of experience, commitment to higher education and his strong alignment with Edge Hill’s values mean that he is the ideal person to take forward the outstanding legacy left by Dr John Cater. We look forward to welcoming Michael later this year and working with him on the next phase of Edge Hill University’s journey and the development of our new 2030 Strategy.”

Professor Young said:

“I am absolutely delighted to have been appointed as the next Vice-Chancellor of Edge Hill University. This is a University deeply committed to inclusive education with a relentless drive for excellence in teaching and research, on a truly stunning campus.

“From the moment I engaged with the University, I was struck by its vibrant culture, strong sense of purpose, and unwavering commitment to opportunity for all.

“This is an institution which will continue to make great strides forward, ready to push boundaries and create transformative opportunities for current and future generations that will support the prosperity of the region and beyond.”

Michael will formally take up the role of Vice-Chancellor at Edge Hill University on Monday 2nd June.
