BioGrad partners with Novacyt to donate £65,000 in industry grade laboratory equipment to support over 9,500 local students in science education

Laboratory specialist, BioGrad, has donated £65,000 worth of industry-grade laboratory equipment to local schools in a significant investment that will benefit more than 9,500 students aged 11-19 across Southport and surrounding areas.

In collaboration with Novacyt, Southport Learning Trust, and Southport Education Group, this donation forms part of BioGrad’s long-standing commitment to nurturing a strong pipeline of local talent in the life sciences sector.

To ensure the long-term impact of the donation, BioGrad is providing free training for science teachers and lab technicians across participating schools. This professional development will empower educators to deliver more engaging and practical science lessons, sparking curiosity and encouraging students to explore pathways in STEM.

Building on its mission to widen access to healthcare and education, BioGrad is offering fully funded scholarships on its Duke of Edinburgh-approved clinical and laboratory training courses for local students aged 16–19. These hands-on opportunities offer a real-world introduction to science, helping students develop the skills they need for successful careers.

In addition, BioGrad has partnered with the UK’s largest liquid medicine manufacturer, based in Southport, to upskill 130 individuals through the government-supported Skills Bootcamp scheme. Backed by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, this initiative will further boost the region’s growing life sciences ecosystem and provide much-needed employment pathways in the sector.

Through these strategic investments and partnerships, BioGrad is ensuring young people across Southport are not only inspired to pursue careers in science but are given the tools, training, and opportunities to succeed.

Dr Natalie Kenny, CEO, BioGrad, said:

“As the UK works toward becoming a global science and technology superpower by 2030, it’s vital that we begin by equipping and inspiring our young people. Engaging them from an early age is crucial, not just for the future of the life sciences sector, but for the future of our communities. Our goal at BioGrad is to make science accessible, exciting, and inclusive for every student, no matter their background.

“As someone proud to call Southport home, it means a lot to be playing a part in growing the life sciences sector, both across the Liverpool City Region and on my doorstep. BioGrad’s investment in future talent isn’t just great news for Southport, it’s a real boost for employers across the North West too. By supporting the next generation of scientists and lab technicians, we’re not only helping the UK reach its goals, we’re giving young people the chance to shape their futures and build exciting, rewarding careers in science”
