Trading since 2008, The Abbey Group is an engineering company offering a broad range of engineering capabilities from traditional metal fabrication to precision engineering. Since then they have expanded their engineering expertise and invested in new technologies to industries across the whole of the UK in the automotive, rail, security, warehousing, energy and structural steel sectors.

Six Stories, Six Boroughs profiles a star business from each borough of the Liverpool City Region, that has used support from the Local Growth Hub as a springboard to success. In this article we take a look at Knowsley based business, The Abbey Group.

Founded in 2008, The Abbey Group specialise in offering a broad range of engineering capabilities from traditional metal fabrication to precision engineering.

The business, based in Knowsley, operates in four key areas: manufacturing, security, energy and site services. On the manufacturing side, they manage everything right through from the design stage, through to completion. When the Abbey Group first met with the Local Growth Hub, they had a diverse product offering but they were unable to clearly see which products were doing well. They lacked the relevant data. The Local Growth Hub helped The Abbey Group streamline its business model and present a simplified product offering with more measurable results.

Adam Kelly, Group Sales & Marketing Director, Abbey Protect said:

“Prior to working with the Local Growth Hub, we couldn’t differentiate the results from our differing product offerings. Since their support we are able to accurately measure and monitor progress across all areas of the business to deliver tangible results to support our future growth and expansion.”

The Abbey Group now offer 3 different solutions in manufacturing, nuclear and security sectors. Their product offering expansion was possible following the receiving £35K from the Made Smarter grant, which allowed the business to build a new factory to support the increase in demand for production.

With the expansion into a larger factory space the business required support and planning to effectively manage an increased workload, which was provided by Knowsley Chamber.

The Abbey Group started just over ten years ago with five staff, they now employ over 80 people and are currently expanding into new markets.
