Hugh Baird College celebrates ‘Our Diverse Planet’ during British Science Week 2020

Students at Hugh Baird College recently took part in British Science Week. The ten-day celebration, taking place from the 6th to the 15th March 2020, aims to get students from across the College engaged with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through various activities such as; photo competitions, quizzes and themed lessons.

This year’s theme was ‘Our Diverse Planet’ to celebrate the amazing diversity across the world. From biodiversity, to cultural and societal diversity, to the diversity of knowledge, to STEM careers and subjects. The A-level students and staff from the College’s Sixth Form Centre took part in various activities to link all 31 A-level/BTEC subjects that the Sixth Form Centre provides, to get all students engaged with STEM, no matter what they study.

Ahmed Mustafa, Hugh Baird College A-level Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics student, said:
“I find human biology and anatomy so interesting, I believe it’s so important for students to be aware of STEM subjects and the amazing careers it can lead to. Thanks to the College, I also am part of the University of Liverpool’s Scholars Programme which offers students the chance to take part in a range of activities aimed at supporting them through the transition from college to university.”

Mia Hankinson, Hugh Baird College A-level Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics student, said:
“I’ve always loved science; I find it really interesting how the world works. Science links to everything in your everyday life and brings some fantastic opportunities. I am part of Edge Hill University’s Widening Access to Medicine (WAM) Programme which, like Ahmed, prepares me for University and a career in Medicine.”

Ruth Mead, Hugh Baird College Senior Curriculum Lead in A-level Maths, Science & Health, said:
“At Hugh Baird College it is so important that we celebrate weeks such as British Science Week, they give our students the opportunity to open their eyes to the range of careers that await them after their A-levels. Last year all of our A-level STEM subjects achieved a 100% pass rate, making the College the number one Further Education College for A-level progress performance in the Liverpool City Region – an achievement worth shouting about!”
