At Wirral Met College, every study programme is designed to lead to employment or support existing staff in developing their employment prospects. A strong partnership with Wirral Council means the ambitious regeneration plans for the borough are underpinned by a robust skills plan designed to create apprenticeship opportunities and jobs.
Working in every sector area, the College works with hundreds of employers to ensure the programmes reflect their needs. Last week, construction students from Wirral Waters Campus were on site at the Hythe, a new development at Wirral Waters in Birkenhead and working with Peel L&P and GMI Construction Group, students gained valuable insight into the initial phases of construction and related ‘green’ skills.
At Wirral Met’s Twelve Quays Campus, photography students took over Visit Wirral’s Instagram account (@VisitWirral), which is the official tourism guide for Wirral. Students shared their stunning work to over 2,500 followers, focusing on a different theme to highlight the beauty of our peninsula, through their incredible work and talent. Themes included waterfront, heritage, nature and landscapes. This work is complemented by computing students who are also developing a website for use by the Borough which is being developed by young people, for young people.
At Conway Park Campus, students were engaged in creating new menu choices for local restaurant Leaf, with their Executive Chef Phil MacKenzie working with students in the College’s training kitchens to showcase and judge their work, contributing to their off the job training as apprentices, as well as preparing full time students to progress into apprenticeships. Culinary Arts students wowed Executive Chef Phil with their dishes and student chefs Katie and Sarah will have their winning dishes appear on Leaf’s menu when they reopen fully from 17th May.
