North West Cancer Research are an independent charity based in Liverpool dedicated to putting cancer needs first, funding pioneering research to tackle the cause, improve the care and find the cure for cancer. Like for so many during the pandemic, so much of what North West Cancer Research normally could do was inaccessible.
Growth Platform’s Business Resilience programme, delivered in partnership with accounting specialists BDO LLP provided the opportunity to step back from the day-to-day and rethink the business approach to challenges, helping to build resilience and identify opportunities for growth. Alastair Richards, CEO at North West Cancer Research shared with us how this programme benefited the charity.
Alastair explained “We took the opportunity to think about our strategy, our team, our supporters, our infrastructure and what we really want to achieve for the people of our region. The full Business Resilience programme including discussions, reviews and a final report provided a mirror against which we could assess ourselves and then reassess with confidence.
The workshop session and the questionnaire that led up to it were challenging at times, but it really made us think about, and reassess, many of the things which we have always done and to consider what we should be doing differently. The session helped us to identify the gaps in our thinking and our organisation and then to start to plan how we address those. It’s given us a framework which we’ll be using for some time in order to make sure that our resources are focussed on what we want to achieve and to have conversations internally which will make us better and stronger. With this we’re confident that we’ll be able to do more and do it better.”
